Signed and dated 30 April 1889, this oil on unlined canvas by Gabriel Loppé (1825–1913) shows Paris with St. Augustin and the Eiffel Tower, seen from the Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre. Inscribed on a label on the verso in the artist's own hand: 'Vue d'ouest de Paris ... Peint sur le Moulin de la Galette ...'

Reminiscent of van Gogh's 1887 panorama of the same view, this atmospheric oil is only the second known Paris cityscape by Loppé – an artist otherwise almost exclusively associated with Alpine and Mont Blanc subjects. As is well documented, Loppé was semi-obsessed with the Eiffel Tower, and this painting was made the month after the tower opened to the public, in the year of the Exposition Universelle of 1889. With its hazy, sweeping vista, it recalls a Pissarro or a Caillebotte, and demonstrates what a first-rate artist Loppé was even away from the mountains.

The vista from the Moulin de la Galette has changed relatively little since Loppé's time, and the building shown on the rue Lepic, in the foreground, still stands today.

Collectors of Gabriel Loppé's rare non-Alpine subjects, 1889 Exposition Universelle-related works, and Impressionist-adjacent Parisian cityscapes will find this an exceptional and historically significant departure from his celebrated mountain paintings.
