Joris van der Haagen
Signed, this oil by Joris van der Haagen (1615–1669) shows an Italian landscape with cattle drovers crossing a ford.
A painter of woodlands, townscapes and panoramas, van der Haagen most likely studied with his father, Abraham, before moving to The Hague in 1639, where he joined the St. Luke's Guild in 1643. His delicate drawings form an important part of his artistic output, evidence of fairly extensive painting trips across the southern Netherlands, Rhineland Germany and France. Views and recurring motifs from the landscapes of Kleve, Arnhem and Maastricht feature prominently in many of his works.
Collectors of Dutch Golden Age landscape painting and Italianate compositions by Northern European artists will find this a fine example of van der Haagen's imaginative, travel-informed landscape practice.
