The firm has always been associated with traditional Old Master, British and European paintings, areas of collecting now complemented by an annual, highly-regarded exhibition of historic views of the Alps and representation of the well-known landscape painter, James Hart Dyke.

In the paintings and drawings offered for sale at John Mitchell Fine Paintings, rigorous selectivity goes hand in hand with careful research and scholarship. A gallery premises close to or on Bond Street in London’s West End has always been at the heart of this family business for over ninety years, and James and William pride themselves in maintaining a period, first-floor gallery near Claridge’s Hotel, where clients can view and discuss pictures in comfort, surrounded by the firm’s extensive library and archive. After more than three decades of participation in the world’s major art fairs at TEFAF Maastricht, in Paris and in New York, there is an increased focus on showing paintings and holding exhibitions in the gallery.

     MEET THE MITCHELLS

    James Mitchell

After leaving school in 1986, James Mitchell spent a year as a stagiaire at Ader Picard Tajan in Paris, then the largest auction house in France. Having then read Modern History at Oriel College, Oxford, James worked in the Old Master Department at Christie’s until 1993, when he began working with his father, Peter. In 1999 James published a monograph on Julius Caesar Ibbetson, an eighteenth-century landscape painter promoted by John Mitchell. The art of this period and style continues to be of great interest to James today, as well as Old Masters and French paintings. He has a long-held interest in the great Dutch marine painters, the Willems Van de Velde.
