    James Hart Dyke

     

    James Hart Dyke is one of Britain's leading contemporary landscape painters, associated with John Mitchell Fine Paintings since his first solo exhibition, Visions of a Travelling Artist in 2002. Hart Dyke is widely known for his adventurous residences, which have included serving as an official artist for MI6 and embedding with British forces in war zones. In 1998, Hart Dyke was chosen to accompany Prince Charles as the official artist on his ‘Royal Tours’. It was during that initial trip when James first saw Mount Everest from the window of the small plane carrying him and his future king. Since those inaugural visits to the Himalayas in the early 2000s, the theme of mountains and wild places continued to gain momentum and drive him forward. As he began to combine painting with mountain climbing, he discovered that ‘My landscapes are really vehicles to interpret space. It's actually really central to my paintings but I never mention it. Even the more abstract and graphic work generally focuses on a play on space.’

    That same sense of the graphic in his work was instilled in him during his time studying architecture at London’s Royal College of Art. It led him to explore and develop different skills and these came to the fore in a major standout exhibition held in 2011: A Year with MI6. This was a seminal moment in his career as his oils and watercolours captured life inside the Secret Intelligence Service (for whom James Bond famously worked) in a way no photographer ever could have, and, in the diversity of technique and subject matter, both real and abstract. The exhibition featured on headline television news in the UK and on BBC coverage and attracted international press coverage. Following the exhibition's success, Hart Dyke collaborated with EON Productions on the James Bond franchise, with one of his paintings appearing in the 2012 film Skyfall.

    Whether perched on a windswept ridge in Patagonia; the summit of Mont Blanc at 8 o’clock in the evening: the flank of Yosemite’s Half Dome or looking up at K2 and Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountains in his latest expedition this past summer 2025, James’s overriding concern is the ‘quality of paintwork’. Whichever subject matter James chooses to work on, first and foremost, the paintings are as much about the language of brushwork, about texture and feeling as they are about the image itself. John Mitchell Fine Paintings continues its long-standing relationship with James Hart Dyke through K2 in Pictures: James Hart Dyke and Vittorio Sella, opening in London before travelling to Italy in autumn 2026.
