Literature

Ludovico Rodo Pissarro and Lionelli Venturi, Camille Pissarro, son art, son oeuvre, Paris, 1939, vols. I & II, no. 1608, p. 301; illustrated vol. II, pl. 306 (dated circa 1902)

Stamped with the initials C.P., circa 1895, this pastel by Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) depicts Les Peupliers à Eragny.

The pastel descended directly through the artist's own family – from his son Paul-Émile Pissarro, then to Hugues Claude and Katia Pissarro – before entering the trade via the Neffe-Degandt Gallery, London. It has an exceptional exhibition record, including a dedicated 2000 exhibition at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Impressionism to the Present: Camille Pissarro and His Descendants.

The work is published in the definitive catalogue raisonné by Ludovico Rodo Pissarro (the artist's son) and Lionello Venturi, Camille Pissarro, son art, son œuvre (Paris, 1939), no. 1608.

Collectors of French Impressionism, Pissarro's late Eragny period, and works with an unbroken family provenance will find this an exceptionally well-documented pastel by one of the founding figures of Impressionism.
