Michael Bennallack Hart: Lyrical Landscapes presented a collection of evocative landscape paintings by British artist Michael Bennallack Hart, at John Mitchell Fine Paintings from 13th to 31st May 2024. The exhibition brought together landscapes shaped by the artist’s travels and longstanding fascination with the natural world, from the British countryside and coastline to scenes encountered further afield.
Born in Sussex in 1948, Bennallack Hart developed his love and understanding of landscape during a childhood spent in the Weald of Kent. Since then, his subjects have extended across the British Isles, Ireland, Europe and the United States. His paintings are distinguished by a strong sense of place and atmosphere, capturing woodland, coastline, open countryside and changing skies through carefully balanced compositions and an expressive use of colour.
Lyrical Landscapes continued Bennallack Hart’s longstanding exploration of the British landscape painting tradition, bringing a quiet, poetic quality to both familiar and more distant places. His landscapes combine observation with memory and mood, revealing the distinctive forms, light and atmosphere of the natural world. The exhibition followed his earlier solo exhibition at John Mitchell Fine Paintings, A Quieter World, held in 2020.
