We were delighted to return to The Boathouse in Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk, for our exhibition Call of the Sea: Four Centuries of Marine Painting. From 19 to 26 August, the exhibition showcased a wide selection of British and European marine paintings, from eighteenth-century British watercolours to French Impressionist seascapes, including a seminal Salon work by Karl Daubigny from 1875.
Among the marine artists represented were Willem van de Velde, Samuel Atkins, Robert Cleveley, John Cleveley, Dominic Serres, Julius Caesar Ibbetson and Martinus Schouman, alongside many others. The exhibition explored four centuries of marine art, maritime painting and seascapes, and also included a newly commissioned Norfolk seascape by contemporary British artist James Hart Dyke.
The exhibition was held at The Boathouse in the coastal village of Burnham Overy Staithe on the North Norfolk coast, a wonderful and wholly appropriate setting in which to show this collection of marine and coastal paintings.
