Created in Conflict: The Photographs of Adam Dobby was exhibited at John Mitchell Fine Paintings from 12 to 22 October 2021. A former member of the SAS, Adam Dobby put down a rifle and picked up a camera, drawing on his experience as both soldier and photographer to document conflict and its effects on those caught up in it.
Dobby’s conflict photography took him across Africa and the Middle East, where his unusual perspective enabled him to tell visual stories of war and its aftermath. His photographs focused particularly on faces and expressions, offering glimpses into the experiences of victims, conscripts, warlords and others caught up in the whirlwind of history.
At a time when thousands of images are consumed every day, these photographs arrested the eye. They were documents not only of suffering, but of the strange beauty found within the war-scarred landscapes of Africa and the Middle East. Through portraiture, documentary photography and images of the landscapes in which conflict had taken place, Dobby explored the complexity of war and the connections human beings can make through a single look or gesture.
A portion of all sales from the exhibition supported the SAS Regimental Association, the official organisation representing the Special Air Service Regiment, and INARA, which provides medical care for children from conflict areas who have suffered catastrophic injuries or illnesses and are unable to access treatment as a result of war.
The limited-edition photographic prints were personally proofed and signed by Adam Dobby and sequentially numbered, with different sizes available to order.
