Charles-Henri Contencin (1898-1898)
The church and village, Val d'Isère, Franceoil on board8¾ x 10¾ in. (22 x 27 cm.)signedSoldSigned, this oil on board by Charles-Henri Contencin (1898–1955) shows the church and village of Val d'Isère, France.
This early morning view was painted looking south over Val d'Isère's church and village towards le Charvet at the end of the valley. The Église de Saint-Bernard-de-Menthon remains the principal church in Val d'Isère today, and all the surrounding buildings are still standing. The village and its history in the Tarentaise Valley can be traced back to the early seventeenth century – three hundred years before the first ski lift, La Solaise, came into operation.
Collectors of Contencin's work and of Val d'Isère/Tarentaise Valley views will find this a historically grounded, twelfth addition to his extensive presence in this collection.
