Roelant Roghman
Rocky landscape with a waterfalloil on canvasSoldThis oil by Roelant Roghman (Amsterdam 1627 – Amsterdam 1692) depicts a rocky landscape with a waterfall.
Roghman painted forests and mountainous landscapes, although his drawings and etchings are better known than his elusive paintings. His drawings, of both topographical and imaginary scenes, bear a striking likeness to Rembrandt's, which clarifies the long-standing association between the two artists – though there remains no firm evidence that Rembrandt taught him directly. The eighteenth-century biographer Arnold Houbraken states that, as well as having only one eye, Roghman was a 'good friend' of Rembrandt.
Collectors of the Rembrandt circle and Dutch Golden Age landscape painting will find this a rare example of Roghman's little-known painted work, distinct from his more commonly encountered drawings.
