Zermatt in winter by Winkelmatten, Valais, Switzerlandoil on canvas34 x 41 cm.signedSoldSigned, this oil by Angelo Abrate (1900–1985) shows Zermatt in winter by Winkelmatten, Valais, Switzerland.
An unusual Zermatt scene, looking away from the village to the north and back down the valley, Abrate painted this from where the Winkelmatten bridge crosses the Vispa river. Today, the river has concrete embankments where it flows through the town, which has considerably narrowed its meander and width since Abrate's time. The mountain flanks visible on the right-hand side are the lower slopes of the Mischabel range, which divides the Zermatt and Saas Fee valleys.
Collectors of Angelo Abrate's work and of village-level, non-summit Zermatt views will find this a rare departure from the high-mountain subject matter of his Grandes Jorasses composition, offering a more intimate, historically informative record of the town itself.
