Edward Theodore Compton
Monte Rosa East-Face, 1907watercoloursigned and dated 1907SoldSigned and dated 1907, this watercolour by Edward Theodore Compton (1849–1921) shows the east face of Monte Rosa.
Compton was one of the two leading peintres-alpinistes of his generation, alongside Gabriel Loppé, and excelled particularly in watercolour – a medium in which his son and only pupil, Edward Harrison Compton, later noted his father seemed most at home. Monte Rosa, the second-highest peak in the Alps, offered dramatic east-facing cliffs that recur as a subject across Compton's watercolour output.
Collectors of the Compton family and of Monte Rosa Alpine views will find this a fine watercolour example, complementing the oil works by both father and son already represented in this collection.
