Peaks & Glaciers 2021 cat p.47Signed and numbered 313 on the verso, circa 1885, this carbon print by Adolphe Braun (1812–1877) shows the Wetterhorn seen from Grindelwald, Berner Oberland, Switzerland. Published in Peaks & Glaciers 2021, cat. p.47.
Adolphe Braun began experimenting with a camera in 1851 and by 1857 had established a fine art publishing firm, Braun et Cie., whose commercial success would ultimately eclipse his own reputation as an individual photographic pioneer. The Wetterhorn, rising directly above Grindelwald, was one of the most recognisable and frequently photographed peaks in the Bernese Oberland during the nineteenth century.
Collectors of early Alpine photography and Grindelwald/Wetterhorn views will find this a fine, precisely dated carbon print from Braun's mature period.
