Gabriel Loppé (1825-1913)
Signed and dated 1896, this oil by Gabriel Loppé (1825–1913) shows crevasses on the Mer de Glace, Chamonix.
The Mer de Glace, France's largest glacier and one of the most visited natural sites in the Chamonix valley, was a recurring subject for Loppé throughout his long career as one of the most prolific and celebrated painters of Mont Blanc and its surrounding glaciers. His depictions of crevasses and ice formations combine close observation of glacial structure with the dramatic light effects for which he was best known.
Collectors of Gabriel Loppé's work and of Mer de Glace/Chamonix glacier views will find this a late and mature example, dated within a decade of the artist's death, of his lifelong engagement with the high-mountain landscape.
