Peaks & Glaciers 2021 cat p.47Circa 1865-1875, this albumen print by Adolphe Braun (1812–1877) shows Pontresina, in the Engadine valley of Switzerland. Published in Peaks & Glaciers 2021, cat. p.47.
Adolphe Braun began experimenting with a camera in 1851 and by 1857 had established a fine art publishing firm whose commercial success would ultimately eclipse his own individual reputation as a photographic pioneer. Pontresina, along with neighbouring St. Moritz, was among the Engadine resorts that Braun documented as part of his systematic photographic survey of the Swiss Alps.
Collectors of early Alpine tourism photography and Engadine views will find this a companion piece to Braun's St. Moritz photograph, both drawn from the same catalogued Peaks & Glaciers 2021 group.
