Charles-Henri Contencin (1898-1898)
Signed, this oil on board by Charles-Henri Contencin (1898–1955) shows the Wetterhorn in winter seen from near First, Grindelwald, Switzerland.
This winter view of the Wetterhorn is, without doubt, one of Contencin's most successful compositions. The combination of a snowbound farmer's hut with sled tracks and a majestic Alpine summit were often all that Contencin needed in his mountainscapes. The log cabin puts the Wetterhorn's plunging north face into proportion, while also adding a sense of isolation high above the valley.
Collectors of Contencin's extensive Wetterhorn and Grindelwald output will find this a fifteenth distinct addition, notably from a different vantage point (near First, rather than Bort) than the companion winter Wetterhorn view already in this collection.
