Literature

Peaks & Glaciers 2019, p. 47

Stamped with the jizuri (self-printed) seal in the upper left margin, signed and inscribed in pencil, dated 1925, this colour woodcut by Hiroshi Yoshida (Kurume, Japan 1876–1950) depicts the Jungfrau. Published in Peaks & Glaciers 2019, p. 47.

Hiroshi Yoshida's much-admired prints of European and American landscapes maintain an allegiance to traditional Japanese woodblock techniques while depicting subjects far from Japan. Born in 1876, he trained in Kyoto and Tokyo as a painter with an extensive knowledge of Western-style painting. Following the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, Yoshida embarked on a tour of the United States and Europe, painting and selling his work; this print of the Jungfrau resulted from that European tour.

Yoshida often worked through the entire printmaking process himself – designing, carving his own blocks and printing his work – processes traditionally divided among separate craftsmen. All prints produced in his lifetime are signed 'Hiroshi Yoshida' in pencil and marked with a jizuri seal outside the margin; within the image, the print is also signed 'Yoshida' in brush and ink beside a red Hiroshi seal. An avid alpinist, Yoshida later established the Japan Alpine Artist Association.

Collectors of shin-hanga Japanese printmaking, Hiroshi Yoshida's international landscape series, and cross-cultural Alpine art will find this an exceptional and rare addition, connecting the Japanese woodblock tradition directly to the Swiss Alps.
