Rudolf Sauter
Signed, and inscribed, signed and dated on a label verso, this oil by Rudolf Sauter (1895–1977) shows the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa, 1926.
Sauter's Drakensberg subject stands apart from the predominantly Alpine focus of the gallery's mountain painting holdings, representing an unusual excursion into South African landscape by a British-based painter working in 1926. The Drakensberg range, southern Africa's highest mountain system, offered dramatically different geology and light from the European Alps that dominate most nineteenth and twentieth-century mountain painting.
Collectors interested in early twentieth-century depictions of southern African landscape, and in British artists working beyond their usual European subject matter, will find this a genuinely unusual and rare example within Sauter's oeuvre.
