Peaks & Glaciers 2021 cat p.46Circa 1865-1875, this albumen print by Adolphe Braun (1812–1877) shows the Innfall at St. Moritz. Published in Peaks & Glaciers 2021, cat. p.46.
Adolphe Braun began experimenting with a camera in 1851 and by 1857 had established a fine art publishing firm. Such was its output and commercial success that Braun et Cie. would ultimately eclipse the remarkable contribution that its founder had made to the emerging photographic scene of the mid-nineteenth century. Unlike the carbon prints for which Braun is best known, this earlier albumen print process gives a distinct tonal quality to the image.
St. Moritz and the wider Engadine valley were among the Swiss resorts Braun documented extensively as the region developed into a major destination for nineteenth-century travellers. Collectors of early Swiss tourism photography and Engadine/St. Moritz views will find this albumen print an important early example, distinct in process from Braun's later carbon print work.
