August Wilhelm Leu
Literature
From Fjord to Forest, cat ref: 26A luminous oil by August Wilhelm Leu (1818–1897), a leading figure of the Düsseldorf School of landscape painting, depicting a Norwegian fjord. Leu was among the many Northern European painters of his generation drawn to the dramatic scenery of Norway's coastline, then a relatively new subject for Continental landscape painters.
Trained in the Romantic tradition that shaped the Düsseldorf School, Leu combined close topographical observation with the atmospheric, luminous handling of water and sky for which Scandinavian fjord subjects became prized among nineteenth-century collectors.
