An oil study of the Matterhorn's west face by the French Alpine painter Charles-Henri Contencin (1898–1955), seen from the Stockli Glacier. Contencin painted extensively in the Mont Blanc massif and the Valais.
His Matterhorn and Chamonix subjects share the clear, high-altitude light and precise glacial detail that made him one of the most respected Alpine painters working in France in the first half of the twentieth century.
