It takes 4 ½ hours to reach Broad Peak Base Camp from Concordia. Getting off the Godwin-Austen Glacier to climb up to the camp felt like getting off an ocean of ice. Floating in a sense above the valley floor, it was a reminder that the glacier is 170 metres deep at this junction. The distance between the two base camps makes little difference to the scale of K2. In this magnificent composition, the gradation in James Hart Dyke’s sky above the summit ridges suggests an atmosphere of enormous proportions.
