Edward Theodore Compton
Signed, this watercolour by Edward Theodore Compton (1849–1921) shows the Ortler, South Tyrol.
The Ortler, the highest peak in the South Tyrol and in the Eastern Alps, offered Compton a subject beyond his more frequently painted Bernese Oberland and Monte Rosa massifs. As one of the two leading peintres-alpinistes of his generation, alongside Gabriel Loppé, Compton's watercolours ranged across the full breadth of the Alpine chain.
Collectors of the Compton family and of South Tyrol/Ortler Alpine views will find this a fine watercolour extending his range beyond the Bernese Oberland subjects already well represented in this collection.
