George Pyne (1800-1884)
Signed and dated 1866, this watercolour and pencil heightened with bodycolour by George Pyne (1800–1884) shows Canterbury Quad, Christ Church, Oxford.
Pyne was a specialist topographical watercolourist of Oxford's college architecture, and this collection already holds several of his views of Christ Church and Magdalen College. Canterbury Quad, one of the college's more secluded courtyards, adds a further precisely rendered corner of the university to his already well-represented Oxford output in this collection.
Collectors of George Pyne's Oxford views and of Victorian topographical watercolour will find this a fine, precisely dated companion to his other Christ Church subjects already held here.
