Roland Gay-Couttet
Circa 1960, this silver gelatin print shows the Forbes Arête on the Aiguille du Chardonnet, credited on the gallery's own record to Roland Gay-Couttet (1925–2002).
The Gay-Couttet name is associated with a family of Chamonix-based photographers active across the twentieth century, documenting the peaks and climbing routes of the Mont Blanc massif. The Forbes Arête, a celebrated mixed rock-and-snow ridge route on the Aiguille du Chardonnet, was a popular subject for mountaineering photographers of this era.
Collectors of mid-twentieth-century Chamonix mountaineering photography and of classic Mont Blanc massif climbing routes will find this an atmospheric period record of one of the range's enduring test-pieces.
