Marcus Jacobi
Signed and dated 1941, this oil by Marcus Jacobi (1891–1969) shows the Niesen, Lake Thun, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland.
Born in Biel, Jacobi came from a family of piano manufacturers and went to study medicine in Bern before becoming a painter. In the 1920s he moved to Merligen on the northern shore of Lake Thun, from where this summer panorama was painted. Floating between Hodler and Vallotton, two of the giants of Swiss twentieth-century painting, Jacobi's landscape style fused elements of Realism and Symbolism. He became known for his views of the Niesen, the volcano-shaped peak overlooking Lake Thun.
Jacobi remains a relatively little-known figure outside Switzerland despite the strength of his connection to two major currents in Swiss modern art. Collectors of Ferdinand Hodler, Félix Vallotton and early twentieth-century Swiss Symbolist/Realist landscape painting will find this a substantial and characteristic example of his work, notable for its scale and its distinctive Lake Thun subject matter.
